Rain

Summer, 1998

Print size 20" x 30"

The natural beauty of Anhui Province provided the inspiration for this piece. Fields stretch into the hillsides, creating patterns on the horizon. Water lilys and lotus grow alongside the rice paddy. Dragonflys hover in the air. The rain on Mt. Huangshan creates a moody and misty environment that shows it's beauty in an understated way.

This piece represents the elements that I associate with the Anhui region of China.

Elements

The raw elements below represent the source material that helped to inspire the overall concept of the painting.

Raindrops on cable car window, Mt. Huangshan.

Since I was a kid, I've enjoyed watching raindrops bead up on a glass surface, and I became entranced again while descending Mt. Huangshan by cable car.

Water Lily, Anhui Province

I can't resist water lily or lotus blossoms and always find myself taking a photo of them wherever I find them.

Dragonfly, Anhui Province

It was challenging to photograph this dragonfly. I couldn't get too close because he would fly away. I was able to extend the monopod with the camera attached and use the timer to take the photo. I was surprised the dragonfly didn't fly away.

Water Lily, Anhui Province

Another beautiful flower.

Name seal, digitally created, representing my name, Lyn.

The use of the name seal or chop is an ever present element in Chinese painting and calligraphy. The chop represents the signature of the artist. I've chosen this character, pronounced "rin" as my name seal because it means "small grove of trees" and represents my love of nature.

Seal, digitally created, means breathing.

In addition to the name seal, traditional Chinese paintings often include another seal with a poetic meaning. This chop represents breathing, and is used here to convey a meditative state of mind.

Seal, digitally created, representing nothingness.

This seal represents the essence of nothingness and again is used in a meditative context.

Seal, digitally created, means morning dew.

This seal represents the essence of moisture found in the raindrops.
