Evening sky with bamboo

Summer, 1998

Print size 20" x 30"

Inspired by the works of Ji Qing Yuan and Zhao Chengmin, Chinese artists at the Beijing Art Academy, this piece was created to explore the traditional Chinese techniques of wash and ink painting.

This painting represents thoughts and ideas from Beijing. Studying at the Art Academy, visiting the Ancient Observatory and spending early mornings in Zizhuyuan Park provided the imagery and experiences for this piece.

Elements

The raw elements below represent the source material that helped to inspire the overall concept of the painting.

Abstract wash and ink painting on rice paper.

Using traditional ink and wash on rice paper allows me to explore the possibilities of mixing these materials together. The liquidness of the wash as it absorbs into the rice paper provides rhythmic movement through the painting.

Bamboo ink painting on newsprint

Bamboo has been an important subject of Chinese painting for centuries. Both ordinary people and the scholar-painter can find meaning in it's form. I enjoy painting ink bamboo because it combines calligraphy with ink painting.

Name seal, digitally created, representing my name, Lyn.

The use of the name seal or chop is an ever present element in Chinese painting and calligraphy. The chop represents the signature of the artist. I've chosen this character, pronounced "rin" as my name seal because it means "small grove of trees" and represents my love of nature.

Seal, digitally created, means breathing.

In addition to the name seal, traditional Chinese paintings often include another seal with a poetic meaning. This chop represents breathing, and in this context the flow of the air, or wind, around the heavens.

Seal, digitally created, means breathing.

This is the same meaning as the seal above, but with a different carving, size and form.

Seal, digitally created, representing nothingness.

This seal represents the essence of nothingness and has been applied to the swirling stars in the heavens.
